About the play
Set in 1990s Ballybeg, County Donegal, this play explores the relationship between the blind Molly Sweeney, her husband Frank and her ophthalmologist Mr Rice, who performs a successful operation to restore Molly’s sight. The play is related as shards of memory as each of three characters recalls the leadup to the operation, the operation itself, and the dramatic impact that Molly’s response to her new sightedness had on all of them. While the two men believed the gift of sight would be nothing short of a miracle, Molly finds her new world threatening and overwhelming and withdraws from it.
This beautifully crafted story captures eloquently each character’s happy and painful histories, leading to an unexpected and very touching conclusion.
