About the play

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies “who are anybody” come to have their hair done. The outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy and her assistant, dispense shampoo and free advice to all and sundry with very mixed results. The characters of the piece have that special quality that makes them touching, funny, and truly amiable company in good times and bad.

‘Steel Magnolias’ was subsequently made into a highly successful film starring Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts.
