THE GLASS MENAGERIEwritten by Tennessee Williamsdirected by Karen Wakeham20 FEB - 8 MAR 2014Weeknights and Saturday at 8:00 pmSundays at 2:00 pmAbout the playThis delicate, moving and beautifully-written play is well known as a reflection of Tennessee Williams' own early life. It tells of the young writer Tom's struggle to cast off the suffocating burden of having to support his mother Amanda and reclusive sister Laura during the depression. However, his well-meaning attempt to introduce Laura to a 'gentleman caller' goes bady awry. The Glass Menagerie has been a much revived Broadway hit. The first film version directed by Irving Rapper in 1950, starred Gertrude Lawrence (Amanda), Jane Wyman (Laura), Arthur Kennedy (Tom) and Kirk Douglas (Jim). The second, directed by Paul Newman in 1987, starred Joanne Woodward (Amanda), Karen Allen (Laura), John Malkovich (Tom) and James Naughton (Jim).
